Three key parameters about the three-stage charger
The first important parameter is the low constant voltage value in the trickle stage, the second important parameter is the high constant voltage value in the second stage, and the third important parameter is the conversion current. These three important parameters are related to the number of batteries, the battery capacity Ah, the temperature, and the battery type. In order to make it easier for everyone to remember, let’s take the three-stage charger used in the most common electric bicycle (three 12V series connected 10Ah batteries) as an example to briefly introduce:
First discuss the low constant voltage value of the trickle stage, the reference voltage is about 42.5V. A high value will cause the battery to lose water and easily cause the battery to heat up and deform; a low value is not conducive to fully charging the battery. This value is lower than 41.5V in the south; gel batteries are lower than 41.5V, and it is even lower in the south. This parameter is relatively strict and cannot be greater than the reference value.
Secondly, discuss the high constant voltage value of the second stage, the reference voltage is about 44.5V. A high value is conducive to fast full charge, but it is easy to cause the battery to lose water, and the current will not come down in the later stage of charging, resulting in heat and deformation of the battery; a low value is not conducive to fast full charge of the battery, and is beneficial to the transition to the trickle phase. Although this value is not as strict as the first value, it should not be too high.
Finally discuss the conversion current, the reference current is about 300 mA. A high value is conducive to battery life, not easy to heat and deform, but is not conducive to fast charging of the battery; low value (for foreigners) is conducive to full charging, but due to a long time of high voltage charging, it is easy to cause the battery to lose water and make the battery Heat deformation. Especially when a problem occurs in some individual batteries, when the charging current falls below the turning current, the battery will be damaged and the battery will be damaged. The given reference value has a certain range, plus or minus 50 mA or even 100 mA are allowed, but it is not allowed to be less than 200 mA.
There are many cheap flyback chargers with a high constant voltage value of 46.5V, a low constant voltage value of 41.5V, and a turning current greater than 500 mA on the market. If it is a charger with four 12V batteries, that is, a 48V charger, the first two parameters are the aforementioned voltage reference value divided by three and multiplied by four. The high constant voltage value is about 59.5V, and the low constant voltage value is about 56.5V. If the battery is larger than 10Ah, increase the current value of the third parameter appropriately. For example, a 17Ah battery can be as large as 500 mA. To buy a new charger, check the three important parameters of the three-stage charger. Users can generally measure the low constant voltage value of the third stage by themselves. The method is to add the mains power to the charger without connecting the battery, and measure the output voltage of the charger with the 200V DC voltage range of the digital multimeter. The other two parameters, the high constant voltage value and the turning current, generally require special tools to be measured.
Add some correct charging methods: 1. After the light turns green, continue charging for 2-3 hours. 2. The principle is shallow discharge (electricity) and frequent charge (electricity), and then charge after 50% each time. Don’t charge too frequently, which will shorten the battery life. 3. If you don’t ride for a long time, charge it regularly (1 month). 4. For batteries with long-term shallow discharge, a deep discharge in about 3 months is the so-called light-emitting recharge, which is beneficial to the activation of long-term immobile substances in the deep part of the battery. Shining means to ride until the controller battery undervoltage protection is activated.
There are several points to remind customers: 1. Generally, the battery should be inspected and maintained 8-10 months after the new battery is put into use. 2. The chargers for general brand-name cars are screened and usually do not need to be tested, but the non-matching chargers purchased separately on the market must be tested for the aforementioned three parameters. 3. There is a thyristor charger without a power frequency transformer, which directly rectifies the mains power to charge the battery. The current can reach 30A, and the voltage is adjustable from 12V to 80V. Do not touch the battery before the mains is completely cut off. Customers who use this type of charger for three rounds must pay special attention to safety.
